Being faithful to anything is a choice. Sometimes its and easy choice and sometimes it’s just not. Whether it’s eating clean, a relationship or just sticking to your word, being faithful is a choice. It’s a choice that unlocks doors, destinies and even brings protection and favor.

A little while ago I was working at a job that I was unhappy with. I wasn’t really using any of my gifts or talents or shinning the way I knew God wanted me to. I remember thinking “what are people saying about me while I’m working here,” and God spoke to me and said, “remain faithful, look at Ruth.” So that’s what I did (sometimes while kicking and screaming).

If you don’t know the story of Ruth, she, her mother in law Naomi, and sister in law were all suddenly widowed and left with absolutely nothing. Ruth’s sister in law decided to return to her people and left both Ruth and Naomi. But Ruth decided, against all logic, decided to stay with her mother in law and become her caretaker. Ruth was still young and beautiful and could have easily found another husband and started over, but she chose to remain faithful.

In Ruth chapter 2, Ruth and Naomi return to Judah, Naomi’s home country. Ruth is now the sole provider for the household, which was very difficult for a woman to do in that day, but she remained faithful. To support herself and Naomi she does something she probably doesn’t want to do, she collects leftover grain from a field. Just for a second, imagine the discomfort and embarrassment that Ruth had to face at that point in her life. She had just lost her husband, she moved to a land foreign to her, and now she lived off just leftovers.

The Right Place

What Ruth did not know is that the field that she was gleaning crops from was the field of the closest relative that could marry her from Naomi’s lineage, Boaz. Ruth was in the right place at the right time for her set time of change because she remained faithful.

“So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of Elimelech.”Ruth 2:3 ESV

When you are faithful to God He will always order your steps and have you at the right place at the right time (Psalm 37:23). Ruth was being faithful to her assignment and that put her in place for a major breakthrough, that would lead to her new life.

Favor, Protection and Provision

As Ruth was minding her own business, providing for herself and her mother in law, Boaz noticed her and became intrigued. He began to ask questions about who this young woman was and he eventually learned her story. He admired her faithfulness to Naomi and her choice to stick with her mother in law.

Ruth’s faithfulness brought her favor. Boaz was so blown away by Ruth’s faithfulness that he instructed his workers to leave a surplus crop for her to collect. He even says “make it easy on her,” to his servants. He insisted that she only come to his field and that she would be protected in his field (as the fields were a dangerous place for a woman to be in that time period). She ate as his workers ate and drank as his workers drank. That’s major favor people!!! He did not owe Ruth anything but gave her all she needed and more.

Boaz was so good to Ruth that she even questioned him. “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?” Ruth 2:10 ESV

To make short story shorter, Boaz goes on to marry Ruth and they both, along with Naomi go on to live a fruitful life and from the lineage of Ruth, the faithful foreigner, came Jesus.

What does this have to do with me?

Listen people if you are a child of God, He has your back! You do not have to worry or fret just remain faithful as Ruth did and in due season God WILL make you to bloom like the flowers in spring. The key is your faithfulness. We all go through seasons of life where we may ask God “why?” Why me, why them, WHY WHY WHY!!! All I can say is remember to remain faithful like Ruth. She had the odds stacked against her but she remained faithful and reaped a major harvest that eventually blessed the world.
